Retrograde
Glossary · Last updated: 2026-07-26
Retrograde motion is when a planet appears to reverse direction against the zodiac background for a few weeks. It is a perspective effect. The planet's real orbit does not reverse.
Mercury retrograde became a pop-culture shorthand for mix-ups. Serious chart work notes all retrograde planets, not just Mercury.
Example: see it on a birth date
A birth date does not tell you if a planet was retrograde. January 25, 2021 still has a Western sun sign of Aquarius.
Retrograde is a planet's apparent backward motion in an ephemeris. It is not a sun-sign fact.

Our daily Western reader uses sun-sign date bands and a rotating focus. It does not compute retrograde motion. Planet guides explain the word as sky vocabulary.
