Birthstones are gems shops link to birthdays or signs. Malls sell aquamarine to babies born in March. Jyotish is Indian Vedic star lore from India. Shops still call it Indian Vedic astrology in books and ads. A Jyotish gem case may show planet stones. You may hear red coral for Mars. You may hear yellow sapphire for Jupiter. Lunar New Year fairs pair animals with gift stones. You may see garnet, jade, or citrine in sets.
Those lists sound old to many shoppers. Many Western birthstone charts are shop deals. Jewel groups made them in the last two centuries. Indian Vedic ratna gems draw on old planet tables. Ratna means gem in that craft. Teachers still disagree on what to wear. Chinese year-animal gem charts are mostly new shop goods. They sit on top of old jade and gold gifts.
This guide explains birthstones in each system. Gem lore is culture, story, and shopping.
Pages name a main gem and backups. They cite lists people use often. Your family may honor a different stone. Your teacher may honor a different stone too. That split is normal.

Western birthstones and sun signs
Shops in the West often follow months. Garnet is the stone for January. Amethyst is the stone for February. The rest of the year follows the same shop list. Sun sign charts use a different grid. Tropical means tied to the seasons. Aries runs from late March through April. An Aries person might wear diamond. April lists often name diamond. March lists may name bloodstone or aquamarine. It depends which table the shop uses.
Western gem lore links stone color to sign traits. Folk lists pair Aries with diamond or bloodstone. Folk lists pair Taurus with emerald. Folk lists pair Gemini with pearl or agate. These are story links. They are not tests of your mind.
Cut, labels, and source matter more than chart fit. A garnet you love can beat a chart pick. Honest source labels matter more than a chart rule. Pick a stone you like and can trust.

Indian Vedic ratna and rashi links
Jyotish links planets to ratna in folk tables. Ruby for the Sun. Pearl for the Moon. Red coral for Mars. Emerald for Mercury. Yellow sapphire for Jupiter. Diamond for Venus. Blue sapphire for Saturn. Navaratna means nine gems in one set. More stones appear in those nine-gem sets.
Rashi means sign in this craft. The Moon sign or lagna may shape a teacher's pick. Lagna means rising sign. Sidereal means tied to the stars. Schools disagree on size, metal, and finger. They also disagree on cleaning rites and trial times. A web page cannot tell you what fits your chart.
Navaratna pieces place nine stones as art and faith. That court craft is not the same as one-stone ads. Shops often blend the two stories.
Treat ratna as folk belief held by some groups. It is not proven cause and effect. Skip sellers who promise wealth, marriage, or health cures. Gems alone cannot do those things. This page is teaching copy. It is not a chart reading.
Chinese zodiac gift stones
Sheng Xiao means year animals in Chinese folk lists. Lunar New Year goods show colors and stones. Garnet is a common Rat gift stone. Tiger's eye is a common Ox gift stone. Pearl is a common Rabbit gift stone. Shops do not all agree. Mainland shops, Hong Kong shops, and overseas shops print different charts.
Five element colors may shift folk color picks. Those five are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. If you were born in January, check the New Year date. Do this before you assume an animal.
Red agate beads stay festival staples. Gold charms stay festival staples too. Jade bangles stay in use with or without an animal tag.

Old shop lists, nine-gem sets, and gifts
Jewel groups set Western month stones in the last two centuries. They made dual lists that still confuse buyers. One list is called modern. One list is called the old list. Polish month stones once differed from mall charts. Arabic month stones once differed too.
Victorian shops mixed travel tales and gem ads. The stones were real. The one sun-sign map came later.

Lab-made gems are real stones with known sources. Look-alike stones are real goods when labeled well. They do not cancel taste when you skip cure claims.
Kids' year-animal gem kits are souvenirs. They are not homework from the sky. Enjoy color and story. Skip scare tales that box people by birth year or sign.

Why do Western and Indian Vedic stones differ for the same person?
