In Jyotish, a rashi is one of twelve sidereal signs along the ecliptic. The ecliptic is the Sun's yearly path. When people say Indian Vedic moon sign, they usually mean the rashi the Moon was in at birth.
Rashis share names with Western signs (Aries through Pisces). They use star-backed positions with an ayanamsa correction. So the labels can differ from tropical horoscopes.
Example: see it on a birth date
August 8, 2020 has a noon Moon estimate in Meena rashi. A rashi is that sidereal sign.
The Western sun sign on the same date is Leo. Moon sign and sun sign often differ.
