In Western astrology, your moon sign is the tropical sign the Moon was in at your birth moment. The Moon changes sign about every two and a half days.
Indian Vedic astrology also tracks the Moon. It uses sidereal rashis and nakshatras. Same Moon. Different coordinate system.
Example: see it on a birth date
The Moon sign on November 1, 2020, estimated at local noon, is Mesha rashi in the Indian Vedic sidereal zodiac.
That is not the Western sun sign, which is Scorpio on the same date.

Why time matters
Moon sign can shift within a single calendar day. Birth time narrows the result. Date-only estimates use a midday default and flag cusp risk.
