Ba Zi
Glossary · Last updated: 2026-07-26
Ba Zi (八字, Eight Characters) builds a chart from four pillars: birth year, month, day, and hour. Each pillar has a heavenly stem and earthly branch.
Your Sheng Xiao year animal is only the year branch. Ba Zi adds Day Master strength, element balance, and luck pillars in full practice. Day Master is the stem of the day pillar.
Example: see it on a birth date
Ba Zi needs year, month, day, and hour pillars. May 7, 2021 gives the year animal in the Year of the Metal Ox.
The year animal is only one part of Ba Zi. It is not the full four pillars, and it is not the Western sun sign.

Our dedicated Ba Zi page walks through Four Pillars at a high level. The Chinese zodiac card stays with the simpler birth-year animal.
